WHY DRINKING WATER IS SO IMPORTANT

Cards or glasses on the table: How much water do you allow yourself per day?

Hydration is not just self-care, it is a basic building block of life. We can survive for a month without food, but only three days without water. That's why it's super important that we drink enough. About half of our body consists of water. And every day we lose about 2.5 liters of it through our kidneys, lungs and skin.

You can think of it as if our body is a half-full glass of water that slowly empties through breathing, moving and life in general. We must therefore ensure that our fluid balance is always in equilibrium. Every day and all life long. Unlike food, our body cannot store water very well. That's why we need to regularly give it what it needs most: Water, baby!

Fun fact that's not even that funny: around 30-40 percent of all Germans demonstrably drink too little. If you want to do something for your karma, don't just drink more yourself - inspire your favorite people to do the same.

This raises several questions for us:

- How much water should you drink per day?

- And is it actually possible to drink too much water?

- Why do you have to drink so much anyway?

We'll answer these and other questions for you now. Let's go.

How much water should you drink per day?

The hard or liquid facts: The German Nutrition Society recommends an average of 1.5 liters per day, but this is only a rough rule of thumb. It also depends on your constitution, your genetic makeup and what you do on a daily basis. (And whether you eat a lot of watermelon.) So although it varies greatly from person to person, here's a rough example: a 70-pound person should consume at least 2.1 to 2.8 liters of fluid a day.

Drinking enough water is also a very healthy routine that you can really train yourself to do: If you always drink plenty of water, your body will also signal to you earlier when it's time again. Heatwaves, all-nighters or an intense daily hussle also call for more water, of course.

Is it possible to drink too much (water)?

Hey, did you know that you can drink too much? But don't worry, it's pretty unlikely that you'll drink 6.0 liters or more in a short period of time and overload your kidneys. That's why we recommend drinking more rather than too little. But don't forget to have fun at the same time. (For example with OH LA LAQUA Waterfusion in woodruff or popcorn flavor). If you're worried that you're not drinking enough, we've summarized how you can tell if you're not drinking enough in our article How to recognize dehydration.

Why do you have to drink so much anyway?

Researchers looking for extraterrestrial life in space always check for water first. Without H2O there is no life - it's as simple as that. Water is one of the most essential building materials for our bodies. Without this fascinating substance, all our cells would be lost, or to put it another way: our body uses water to transport important substances, boost our metabolism and keep us cool when we sweat. The blood can flow better and waste products are simply sorted out. A great bonus: When we drink enough water, it even has a positive effect on our thinking and appearance. We can concentrate better and have clearer and smoother skin. A real power drink that makes us glow!
